Joey Yau

Joey Yau Art Educator & Artist

Joey Yau is a talented Artist graduated from the prestigious School of the Art Institute of Chicago –one of the most influential art schools, which has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top two graduate art programmes in USA. Joey possesses high academic qualification with honours in Fine Art Painting & Drawing, and was selected for the Advanced Painting Programme in the final graduation year at SAIC.

After graduation, she worked as an educator on decorative arts, architecture and social history at the historical Glessner House Museum in Chicago. With numerous exhibition experiences in the U.S., she returned to Hong Kong in 2006 and started teaching art at Anastassia Art House, specialising in oil & acrylic and watercolour painting to adults and children, where she had stayed until 2010. She returned to the company in 2015 to continue pursuing her teaching and painting practices after working in the Museum sectors including the Education team for M+ of West Kowloon Cultural District Authority.

Joey has accumulated near 10 years of solid art teaching experiences to students of all ages. She is passionate about passing on the wealth of art knowledge, which she finds most exciting and rewarding besides making her own art.

Through the act and process of painting, Joey poetically expresses her visions from images in her memory, daily observation, different visual references, and questions the reality we live in. Her paintings display a strong sense of individuality, surreal spatial dimension and personal experiences. The spaces and subjects she paints, the colours she uses and the way she balances the light & dark in each painting, which are beautifully captured by the bold yet delicate brushstrokes, are masterfully merged with her conceptual practices, creating paintings that are figuratively abstract. She is particularly fond of abstracting an ordinary image with colours and brushstrokes – underneath the richness and complexity of the painting surfaces reveal a deep passion in life and an ephemeral sentiment. Gerhard Richter, Vija Celmins, David Hockney, Alex Katz, Anselm Kiefer, and Francisco Goya are some of the artists she admires.

A recent recipient of the Hong Kong Art Prize 2013, Joey has been actively participating in various international art exhibitions across the world. She receives painting, book illustration and storyboard commissions, and her paintings are in private collections in USA, Europe, Beijing and Hong Kong. Her students are also recipients of numerous HK art competitions including prize from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in HK.
